As you launch your study of Mark Twain’s classic American novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, use this dynamic approach to motivate your students to read closely, think deeply, and make connections between their modern lives and Huckleberry’s world.
The 3-page PDF includes a detailed assignment sheet, a student topic sign-up sheet (project this using the “view” or “slideshow” feature of your PDF reader) featuring 12 different theme selections, and a rubric for grading team presentations at the end of your unit.
I allow students to choose their topics and teams via a lottery, which builds anticipation and fun as we start Huckleberry’s journey down the mighty Mississippi. Along the way, students meet occasionally in their topic teams to chart their progress and work on their presentation materials. By the end of the novel, students will be ready to teach a lesson on their topic. I set up this assignment to work with a class of up to 36 students (12 topics x 3 students per topic = 36 students). If you have a larger class, you’ll need to have a few teams of four students or add an additional topic.
I hope you like this lesson, which helps keep students busy with Common Core-aligned tasks while they work through the bulk of Mark Twain’s novel.
