Active learning vocabulary task based on the novel by Mark Twain. The puzzle contains 36 words. Some are key words from the text. Others are important words with which students should be familiar for discussion and analysis of the text.
Words are .. adopt, adventure, bravery, cheat, civilization, conscience, custody, dialect, dilemma, disguise, drunk, escape, feud, fortune, foster, fraud, freedom, fugitive, gentility, gullible, honest, hoodwink, hospitality, inheritance, integrity, journey, kidnap, lynch, missionary, pirate, reward, slavery, smallpox, steamboat, swindle, and will.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, this is deceptive. It is an active learning activity that gets them thinking about words.
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared. Alternatively you could use if pre-teaching vocabulary.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging.
The solution is included. Download the preview file to see the grid and the solution.
