Product Description

Make teaching easier with th e Body Membranes Review Worksheet. This product was designed to help students understand and retain detailed concepts introduced in the first lecture of Human Anatomy & Physiology Unit 4: The Integumentary System. Questions are in easy to grade format, matching, multiple choice. Use this as a lesson review or as an introduction to body membranes activity. Teacher answer key is provided. Easy for teachers to grade, students can answer on their own paper, on a scansheet, or on the worksheet provided.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. List the general functions of each membrane (cutaneous, mucous, serous, and synovial) and give its location in the body.
  2. Compare the structure (component tissues) of the major membrane types.
  3. Differnetiate between and identify the locations of the peritoneal, pericardial, and pleural membranes.

Materials:

1. Student handouts

2. Teacher answer key

3. Notes or textbook (optional)

Simple, but effective, students get to apply their knowledge and retain it longer. Teachers will find this resource simple and easy to use and understand.

The Unit Plan

Make teaching Anatomy & Physiology easy with this combined unit and daily lesson plan that covers 8 blocks or14 periods of a secondary A & P course. SIOP, gifted, and differentiation strategies are embedded and easily identified throuought. Lessons are differnetiated accoding to learning style, grouping, and language ability. Both content and literacy standards as well as key vocabulary words, essential questions, activating strategies, instructional strategies, and summarizing strategies are included and highlighted.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

Content Standards:

SAP2: Students will analyze the interdependence of the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems as these relate the protection, support and movement of the human body.

  • Relate the structure of the integumentary system to its function role in protecting the body and maintaining homeostasis.

SCSh2. Students will use standard safety practices for all classroom laboratory investigations and activities.

  • Follow correct procedures for use of scientific apparatus and demonstrate appropriate technique in all laboratory situations.
  • Follow correct protocol for identifying and reporting safety problems and violations.

Literacy Standards:

  • L11-12RST2: Determine the central ideas of conclusions of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paragraphing them in simpler but still accurate terms.
  • L11-12RST3: Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments…

Content Objectives (TSWBAT):

  1. List the general functions of each type of body membranes and compare the structure of each.
  2. Identify the general characteristics and major functions of the skin.
  3. Describe the structure of the layers of the skin.
  4. Compare and contrast accessory skin structures and layers of the skin.
  5. Describe the factors that determine skin color and describe the function of melanin.
  6. Describe how skin helps regulate body temperature.
  7. Differentiate between 1st , 2nd, and 3rd degree burns and treatment for each.
  8. Explain the importance of the “Rule of Nines”.
  9. Summarize the characteristics of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma.
  10. List examples of integumentary system aging.

Language Objectives:

  1. Discuss the role of the skin in protecting the body and maintaining homeostasis.
  2. Read documented case studies and solve clinical application scenarios related to skin diseases and conditions.
  3. Write, discuss, and use key vocabulary appropriately.

Key Vocabulary: epithelial membranes, cutaneous membrane, mucous membrane, serous membrane, serosa, serous fluid, peritoneum, pleurae, pericardia, synovial membrane, skin, integumentary system, integument, dermis, epidermis, subcutaneous (hypodermis), keratinocytes, keratin, stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum, melanin, melanocytes, epidermal dendritic cells, Merkel cells, dermis, papillary layer, dermal papillae, reticular layer, decubitus ulcers, cyanosis, skin appendages, exocrine glands, sebaceous (oil) gland, sebaceous glands, sebum, acne, blackhead, whitehead, seborrhea, sweat glands, sudoriferous glands, eccrine glands, sweat, apocrine glands, hair, matrix, hair follicles, hair bulb, arrector pili, nail, burn, rule of nines, partial-thickness burns, full thickness burns, fist degree burns, second degree burns, third degree burns, fourth degree burns, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and ABCDE rule
