This is three part, 1,200 slide fully interactive PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), built-in step by step drawings, constant review questions, sugar baby project and worksheet, many critical video links, 6 page homework bundle, answer keys, lesson notes with visuals, and much more.
Part 1: The Human Endocrine System:
This PowerPoint begins showing the students 5 really relaxing and enjoyable slides of tropical places and warm fuzzy things like teddy bears. The slideshow then explains that we will take some notes. Teacher advances next the slide and blows a loud whistle. Images of a scary girl from the movie "The Ring" are shown. The loud whistle and scary images put the class into a heightened state of alert. A slide gives the students a minute to recover. The lesson then breaks down what has just occurred in their body / introduces the Endocrine system. I often notify students who don't enjoy being startled before class as a heads up. The PowerPoint then introduces the various glands of the endocrine system one at a time with visuals. The endocrine system is defined (red slide note). Glands are then described as are hormones(red slide notes). Activities that occur in the body are addressed one at a time with visuals. A picture of some foods get the salivary glands going. Important hormones are addressed. A really neat video link to the front seat of a roller coaster ride gets the students adrenals going. I have the class sit in front of the screen and lean back, and move side to side with the coaster. The students will want to ride again. The PowerPoint then covers Dopamine and addresses methamphetamine (Meth) and its dangers / effects on the body. Why Meth is so dangerous is described in reference to neurons in the brain and dopamine release. Some pictures of people before and after meth use, as well as meth mouth are described. A very graphic video / anti Meth ad from the Montana Meth Project is provided. Preview before showing because these ads are graphic and emotional. A warning is built into the slideshow. I live in a region with some meth issues so I went all out here. The differences and similarities between the nervous and endocrine system are addressed. How hormones create homeostasis is described and so are counter hormones. Exocrine glands and the substances they secrete are shown with visuals. The pituitary gland, thymus, and thyroid are described (red slide notes and visuals). The pancreas is addressed and references to teenage type II diabetes. A video link is provided. The ovaries and testes are described as is estrogen and testosterone. Puberty is described in a step by step approach. A reading is then provided for a girls article, and boys article. The two groups break apart. Separate classrooms would be best, but I have created a divider with a gym mat that has worked. Students read the article and answer some questions. A link to a puberty video from 1955 is provided. The students really like the classic "ness" of the video. I tell them their parents may have seen this one. Levels of testosterone in a male throughout their life, and estrogen in a female (menopause) are described with step by step visuals. All of the glands and their job are then described and students play a matching game. A series of hidden box games conclude the PowerPoint that has the students guess relevant pictures from the unit. Each slide reveals more of the puzzle beneath. This is a informative and fun PowerPoint that your students will enjoy.
Part 2: The Human Reproductive System
This part begins with an optional sugar baby project. Students are partnered up (boy and girl, odd ones out are single parents) and given a 5 lb bag of sugar. A responsibility sheet is provided that describes the project and the student create a schedule for the week. They carry dress up the sugar baby and carry around school for 5 days. Questions and follow-up are provided at the end of the slideshow. A couple of parenting video links are provided.
The reproductive system begins asking the students which body system would they want to remove if they had to remove one. They learn that the reproductive system is the only one not critical to survival. The reproductive system is described as a red slide note. The sperm and egg are defined with visuals. A neat pin the tail on the egg activity presented to preface fertilization is included. A step by step drawing of a sperm occurs, follows by an egg. Chromosomes are described, and a close-up of the chromosome and DNA shown. The number of chromosomes in haploid and diploid is referenced. Students guess the number of chromosomes in a variety of cells to discover that the sex cells have 23 and the others have 46. A description of human reproduction follows with some stick figures and references to chromosomes (G-Rated). The male reproductive system is then covered. A step by step drawing and labeling addresses the male, as well as the female. All parts are labeled and a series of questions follows that has the students guess the swapped term / match terms. The menstrual cycle is described. Human development is described with many visuals. The placenta is shown. References are made to smoking and drinking while pregnant / health effects and video link provided. A series of hidden box games conclude the PowerPoint before the sugar baby wrap up. Each slide unveils more hidden picture beneath. Students takes guesses to the relevant picture beneath. Sugar baby questions finish the PowerPoint that has the students reflect upon their experience carrying and caring for a sugar baby. This is a very informative PowerPoint that covers the delicate topic of Human reproduction. A link to the Miracle of Life (NOVA) is provided at the end for an extension with follow along worksheet.
Part 3: Endocrine and Human Reproductive System Review Game. This is a 1-20 PowerPoint Quiz game of 200 slides that has the students work in small groups to answer questions. The answers are revealed at the end so the students can self assess. A template sheet is provided for the students to record their answers.
