Students will love to write about their family and draw a pedigree based on one of their own phenotypes! It is a great fully-customizable project for students to design their own pedigrees based only benign family characteristics (or their own choice as ok'd by their teacher). The project description includes several easy-to-observe characteristics that would be fun for a student to discuss with their family at home. Students will be engaged and excited about doing this project! My students loved it and it was their favorite project for the whole year!
Importantly, there is a rubric attached that I have tested and used in my own classroom effectively. It is easily changed by adding more or subtracting rows in a word document table.
In the description, I purposely do not include a key or expectation for the standard pedigree symbols because I find this varies from teacher to teacher. If your class is at a general level, you could keep it simple, just squares and circles. For my advanced students, I use the ones published in the following paper you can google:
"Standardized Human Pedigree Nomenclature: Update
and Assessment of the Recommendations of the National
Society of Genetic Counselors" J Genet Counsel (2008) 17:424–433
