This activity reinforces the notion that the human body though vastly unique has very symmetrical and proportionate characteristics. This means that in many ways we can measure certain aspects of the body and estimate from those measurements characteristics like height or bone density or stride length or foot size!
I use this lab in junction with my forensic science unit. It is lab that focuses on accurate measurement and precise recording. The lab also allows students to collaborate on measurements (their stride/height/leg length) to find an average proportion that serves to estimate height and/or stride. I like to use the proportions we come up with to estimate a student's unknown height. My student's seem to really enjoy the lab's relevance. If your searching for lab for your AP Bio skeletal structure or you want a fun lab that allows for students to look into human gait (walking) then this may be a good addition to the activity collection.
