Engaging ecology/ecosystems activity! Middle school students read about 6 examples of overharvesting that significantly affected resource availability, and gather information in a simple graphic organizer worksheet.
Each of the 6 examples of overharvesting is a quick informational reading between 1-2 pages long each, with color pictures. Examples include elephants, Burmese pythons, frankincense, blue fin tuna, oysters, and a medicinal tree used for chemotherapy. To save time and copies, make about 8-10 copies of each reading, and have students rotate one reading at a time and return it to the pile when completed. (You can also save the readings year-to-year to save time and copies next year!) As they read the information, they complete a graphic organizer with information about how overharvesting has affected that species.
