Class Activity to Learn the Quadratic Formula
2 sets of cards - full page and half page sizes
Objective: Students hold a card with a piece of the Quadratic Formula on it. On cue, they arrange themselves into the quadratic formula as fast as they can.
Optional: Attach a string to the square root symbol so it can be extended over the terms in the Discriminant. I have students arrange themselves in a front row and back row to take care of it being a fraction, but you could also use string for this.
Activity Directions: Give one card to each student - have them stand up and face each other. Then have them "mingle" - walk around, talk, etc. - each time they approach another student while mingling, they have to trade cards (or get one if they don't have one to start with). Give an agreed upon signal (blow a whistle, stop playing music, etc.) to stop mingle time and arrange themselves into the quadratic formula as quickly as possible.
Time them to see if they can beat their previous time, or print multiple copies on different color paper and split your class into groups and have the groups race.
Great activity to get your class up and on their feet, or even take them outside!
