This fun project allows the students' creative side to shine through as they have to research a mathematician (from a provided list) to create a fictional obituary for their mathematician of choice.
The strength of this project is that, due to it's nature, it resists the students borrowing from existing work. The nature of it forces the students to synthesize multiple sources in an original, creative format, while learning math history. In addition, this project works for many grade and content levels. Younger students will be setting the stage for mathematicians that enter later discussions and can be called upon as the "experts."
A grading rubric is provided.
We acknowledge that teachers may wish to modify the format of this project and change, for example, how the points are awarded or perhaps modify the list of mathematicians. The project is being sold in .pdf format in part because uploading the MS Word format of changes formatting. If a purchasing customer wishes to have emailed to them a Word copy, we would be happy to try to find a way to make that happen.
