This thematic unit plan explores Brandon Stanton's famous picture blog and New York Times best seller "Humans of New York". This unit will help teach students how to explore the meaning/tone of a picture and the steps required to write a short narrative. Topics such as cultural bias, making a title, plot diagrams, conflict, quotations, short stories, descriptive language, photography, narratives, and engaging in dialogue are discussed. The activities in this unit make use of the "Humans of New York" Facebook series, the Humans of New York website, and Stanton's two books "Humans of New York" and "Humans of New York Stories".
The unit culminates with an activity which allows students to explore humanity within their school. The unit takes approximately 10-15 classes.
