This hidden picture puzzle reinforces skills in place value and adding 10/subtracting 10. The puzzle is a preview of my "Who Lives Here?" mystery picture set. There are three options for prepping the puzzle:
1) Option 1 - Reproduce Worksheet 1 (one per student). It contains a hundred chart and an accompanying number key. Students color the chart according to the key.
2) Option 2 - Reproduce Worksheet 2 (one per student) and a separate Clues page. The clues feature problems involving adding 10 (62 + 10, 10 + 20) or subtracting 10 (14 – 10, 56 – 10). Students color the chart according to the sums and differences they've calculated. (The Clues page displays two identical sets of clues that take up half a page. So, if you have 20 students, reproduce 10 pages and cut in half to separate the sets.)
3) Option 3 - Reproduce several copies of Worksheet 2 and the Clues page. Make activity cards with the Clues pages and place the materials at a math center for small-group activities.
(FYI - The hundred chart on Worksheet 2 has a writing line where students indicate the title of their puzzle. Since the page will be used with all the puzzles in my "Who Lives Here?" set, the title helps differentiate the various puzzles.)
I hope you and your students enjoy the puzzle!
