Students often use general words in their writing or when describing a character. This activity takes the word 'brave', then gives synonyms that the students have to place in order of least brave to most brave. Students have in-depth discussions about the words and have to support their thinking.
There are two levels of words so you can differentiate your teaching.
I have also added a simple character trait web so the students can practice using the new vocabulary. Finally, there is a very simple technology integration suggestion.
Based on Common Core Standards; determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific vocabulary, determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words, consult reference materials- digital and print, analyze specific word choices,engage effectively in collaborative discussions, and use technology, including the internet, to produce and publish writing.
