Home Reading Program (Kindergarten to Grade 5): Hungry For Reading!
Do you want to start up a home reading program for your class or elementary school? This package contains everything you need to get started! All you need to supply is a few prizes. Instead of many home reading programs that are based on the number of books children have read, this program focuses on the amount of time students spend practising reading, which evens the playing field for your students' various reading abilities.
How it works:
At the beginning of the school year, every child gets their own caterpillar sticker chart to put up on a bulletin board in the class. In "Hungry For Reading", students will try to collect all the food stickers for their hungry caterpillars. Every month, students get a calendar to take home to record how many minutes they have read. At the end of the month, parents sign and return the form to you. If students have read the required number of minutes for their grade, they get a sticker on their chart (or they can colour the food images). They also earn a small prize (provided by you) – pencils, bookmarks, erasers, etc. You could even offer free privilege coupons, such as sitting by a friend, or getting an extra show-and-tell. As a further incentive, you could offer a larger prize for students who collect all their food stickers by reading their minutes every single month.
What is included in this package:
- Introductory letter for parents
- Calendars for every single month of the program (October-May)
- A caterpillar student sticker chart to photocopy (two on one page)
