Want to simulate the experience of hunter-gatherers with your students? If so, this is the activity for you! I recommend doing this activity outside, but it can be easily adapted to do inside the classroom or school.
Divide your class into groups of 4-5 (Call them families)
Then, hand out the list of items they must find within the amount of time you're giving them (I recommend about 15 mins).
Have them search for the items and then find you when their task is complete. Students must then answer the reflection questions.
Do not buy enough items for everyone to succeed. The point is to show that food was scarce when there were too many people living in the same area.
These are the items I purchase, however, feel free to buy whatever is easiest or available to you:
animal cookie packs (hunted animal)
fruit snacks (fruit)
sunflower seeds (seeds)
Jolly Ranchers (plants)
Dog bone treat (animal bones)
