Welcome to the Hurricane Harvey Read-A-Thon project. In this project is everything I used as a librarian in 2006 when Hurricane Katrina struck to raise money with a read-a-thon. One of my third graders said that we should send money to the kids for library books. So I created this read-a-thon for grades K – 5 (but it could be used at any age someone feels appropriate). We raised $1500 (in a small school district) and sent every penny to a library that was affected by the Hurricane. I was so proud, and my students felt so amazing.
Now Hurricane Harvey has happened, and, as an educator, my heart breaks for the people affected, especially the children who need books to take them away from the trauma. That’s what this product is for.
In it you will find:
a check-list of the timeline I used to help teachers know what to do when
the parent letter I sent home
the pledge sheet to explain how the read-a-thon works and record pledges
the reading record for the student’s reading minutes
the envelope to for students to collect money in
and the explanation that I taped to large envelopes to collect pledge records and money.
All of these sheets were created in Microsoft Word 365 University and saved as .docx documents. I am completely allowing you to edit them as needed. You will need to edit because I still have information specific from my school district and where we were sending it. If you can’t open it or edit it, please let me know by going to “Product Q & A” or “Ask a Question” on my TPT website, and I’ll try to save it in a different compatibility mode for you.
Please share this resource far and wide so we can raise money for these unfortunate schools and children. Please also make sure that the money is going to a reputable source.
Thank you for downloading this activity. If you enjoy this, please check my store for more fun book reports that students love to do. You can also find many different worksheets and activities based on favorite children's books and fairytales.
Please provide feedback so I know what other items you may be interested in.
All activities are student tested and teacher approved!
