August 2015 is the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina!


This short-form article and corresponding worksheets will introduce elementary school students to Hurricane Katrina and the major factors that allowed it to devastate New Orleans. In addition, hurricanes in general are explored through worksheets and activities.

This curriculum includes a reading sheet for four reading levels (second, third, fourth, and fifth grade), lesson plans, debate prompts, an inquiry report topic, and more. The answers are also included in the teacher’s answer key, and each reading sheet and worksheet can be reproduced for students.

- Hurricanes in the United States and Mandatory Evactuation
- Internet Activity: Compare Two Hurricanes

Week Two, Step 1
Choose one activity:
- Debate sheet
- Inquiry Report sheet
- Current Event Notebook Illustrations: Have students color and cut out the illustrations to include in a current event notebook.
- Coloring sheet

Week Two, Step 2
Choose one activity:
- Hold a class debate.
- Have students write an Inquiry Report based on their research.
- Have students glue the appropriate illustrations in their current event notebooks as they write about the current event.
