Do you want a great mini-lesson that shows students how to spice up their writing? This Smartboard lesson does just that! After seeing these detailed slides and models, students love creating hyphenated words and phrases that add a more detailed description to what they want to say. Use the Smartboard pull screen to reveal notes (one at a time) about how students can create unusual adjectives as they write. (I have students copy these notes and examples in interactive writing notebooks). Slides and models are given on how hyphenated words can add a precise description, a strong feeling, or a bit of humor to their writing. Using this technique is a compositional risk we want to see in students' writing. It's a lesson that is meaningful and fun and another way for students to REVISE writing.
