This is a 200 slide PowerPoint presentation about thermoregulation, hypothermia, hyperthermia, and tips to avoid both. This PowerPoint includes some built-in video links about heat exhaustion and thin ice safety, many built-in questions and answers to review prior slides, exciting visuals, and two neat activities (see below). Also included are some lesson notes, and one page classwork sheet that asks the students to describe how you have a range of tolerance when it comes to temperature.

Neat Activity #1: I live in the east coast and run this PowerPoint in January. After learning behavioral and physiological adaptations to the cold, I take my class outdoors without jackets to experience the cold for a few minutes. The day has to be just right usually at or around freezing. Students record the time and adaptation to the cold they experience. A spreadsheet is provided. I usually run this right next to the door and send students inside as necessary. We are only usually outside for a few minutes but it's really exciting for the students observing how their body responds. I remind the students that I'm not trying to be cruel or freeze them but teach them so they can recognize the signs of very early hypothermia. If this sounds awful or if you live in a warm climate just skip over it or bring it up as discussion. My principal is fine with it, but I would recommend running it by your supervisor. We learn by doing...right?

Neat Activity #2. Homeostasis is then described in a series of slides with thermal images and connection to Halloween and blood sugar. An activity then has the student find their resting pulse and temperature. Students then do jumping jacks at their desk or run in place. A link for some music is provided. Students then take their pulse again. Students learn to find resting heart rate and then compare after exercise. Students can also take temperature but I usually have a few students do temperature and then we look at their data. The increase is minimal which is important as our body temperatures don't fluctuate the same as our heart rate. A spreadsheet, questions, answers, and much about the activity are provided.

Also included is an extended version of this PowerPoint that covers more material associated with thermoregulation and ecology. This extended version covers all of the above but also has many more slides discussing how animals thermoregulate in the environment.
