I AM NOT A NUMBER, written by Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer,
illustrated by Gillian Newland, is a heartbreaking story about a young girl’s experience at a residential school.
All BC Curriculum Big Ideas for grade 4-9 in Language Arts and Social Studies relevant to this unit are identified. Outside of BC, similar curricular comparisons can be made.
Lessons include student and teacher assessment rubrics.
This novel study unit is also available in a bundle with the novel, As the Rivers Flow.
To obtain a copy of this book and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations, an online bookstore supplying indigenous and Native American books. Not only do they have an extensive selection, they provide themed book bundles for all age ranges.
