This is a one page handout that requires students to define vocabulary from the prologue of I Am Malala.
It is for the Young Readers Edition.
It also requires them to cite textual evidence to answer questions addressing characterization, setting, cultural nuances, setting, and foreshadowing.
If there is interest, I am willing to create similar lessons, quizzes and answer keys for the entire book.
Common Core Standards Addressed in this activity:
Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech.
Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary).
Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
