Description

FREE I Am Poem! Great for a Beginning of the Year or End of the Year Writing Activity. Get to know your students at the beginning of the year (or anytime) with this fun writing activity. Younger students can fill in with words with teacher assistance. I have my middle school students put a phrase on each line, such as "I am the pen that is mightier than the sword," developing metaphors with the ideas.

My students, even my special needs children, had a great time with this. We also did this in conjunction with reading a nonfiction article about Malala Yousafzai, the girl who was shot by the Taliban. At the time, many children of the world held up signs saying, "I am Malala." and we discussed how the pen can be mightier than the sword. Then we watched her speech to the U.N. It was a very powerful activity. Younger students can color the "I Am" and draw a "self-portrait" underneath. Hang on to the poems, and then have your students write another I Am poem at the end of the year and see if anything has changed. 6 pages including the 2 digital pages.

Another great extension activity is to have your students create "We Are" poems in the same format.

I have also included fun "I am Poem" cards for a hands-on project. Print out the sheet on card stock, and student cut out, write, and decorate each box except for the title card. On the blank card they can draw a picture or add a photo of themselves. Then they can either glue them on a colored poster board background or put the cards in baseball card sheet holders (available in collector shops or online). Enjoy their creations, which also make a great bulletin board display.

Print and Digital: I have also made a Easel Activity ready to go for distance learning with a digital pen tool, highlighter, and text boxes for students to type their answers. It is an Interactive layer over the original pdf. You can then assign it via Google Classroom. Click here to learn more if you want to understand how Easel Activities work. You can even add your own directions or notes! This is helpful for distance learning.

Have a great year! HappyEdugator
