Students are asked to first look at six primary source photographs of children passing through Ellis Island. The kids will then choose a child to focus in on and write an "I Am" poem from this child's point of view.

This requires students to think critically about the topic of immigration, taking the feelings, thoughts and emotions of immigrants into consideration when writing their poems.
