I would love to hear your feedback :). I created this main idea product for (grades 2-4) students to be able to demonstrate their understanding of both fiction and nonfiction texts by choosing details that help them know main ideas and by writing out that main idea. I wrote the passages to be just long enough for teachers to quickly assess whether students know the skill.

The passages progress in difficulty so that they can be used to differentiate within reading groups while still teaching the main idea concept to all of the levels in a classroom. Each passage asks students to write a sentence to explain the main idea and has a multiple choice question that asks which detail in the selection helped them know the main idea so it is a reliable format. It becomes valid when students receive feedback and the ideas are discussed. This product is not editable.
