We’ve all written common-core standards on the board and thought, “what does THIS statement even MEAN??”. The wording is often vague and very confusing... so imagine how our students must feel!
8 Checklists of Student-Friendly Statements (129 total) to use throughout the school year as a tool for self-assessment. Each statement is followed by a problem that illustrates that standard. This gives the students a clear understanding of what, specifically, they need to know how to do. After solving the problem, the students assess their own knowledge by "checking" one of the following:
- "I Got this!! I can do it myself and explain it to my teacher/classmates."
- "I can do this by myself, but an not ready to teach it to someone else."
- "I need some more time to learn this."
The statements are all based on the common-core standards and are separated
into 8 “topics”. Use the checklists at the end of a lesson, mid-way through a unit,
at the end of a unit, or as an end-of-the-year review!
Template and Instructions for you to create and/or project your own “I Can...” Statements as well as the self-assessment “strip” for you to copy and laminate. It’s a perfect tool for formative assessment as you teach your daily lessons.
Providing our students with the opportunity to self-assess will help them grow as learners by reflecting on what they can do and what they still need to learn. I think it’s a great idea to post all of the “I Can...” statements the students will be responsible for learning at the beginning of each unit so they can see how each standard leads to the next.
