￼I Can Be an Author!
This unit is ready to be printed and taught. This unit is built on Common Core Standards and is designed for getting your
students writing about Informational Text.
Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of books by a favorite author and express opinions about them).
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or informa1on in a text.
There are 5 different Insects included in this unit. Each Insect includes the following activities:
Informational Text Reading
Graphic Organizer- Can Have Are
Writing Paper with Sentence Starters
Day 1: Read Informational text and highlight
Day 2: Graphic Organizer as a class
Day3: Fill out Graphic Organizer Day 4: write paper using graphic organizer
Day 5: Share out
After all the insects are complete have the students make a glossary. Model how we make a glossary.
Next, have the students make a cover.
Last, bind the books together and add in the the Table of Contents page. Have the students go through their book and number the pages and fill out the Table of Contents.
This unit can be added to your already existing unit about Insects. It can easily work with any books, magazines, or educational videos about Insects.
