o This sheet can easily be placed in the correct domain of the student binder by following the coded graphic on the page.
• 6 “I know I can!” sheets (one for each domain)
o Students use this page to rate their understanding of the standard using Marzono’s four levels of understanding.
o Students use this page to record a goal for this standard.
o All evidence for learning for each standard falls behind this page.
Here’s a synopsis of the student binders and their function in the classroom.
Each ELA binder has six domain tabs:
• Reading Literature
• Reading Informational
• Reading Foundational
• Speaking and Listening
When you introduce a standard, distribute the “Let’s Get to the Core of This!” sheet. It goes behind the appropriate domain divider (coded by graphics!). Complete the sheet as you see fit (whole group, with partners, independently, over one day, over several days, etc.).
When you begin to collect evidence of mastery for the standard, distribute the “I know I can!” sheet for that standard (also coded by graphics!). Students will rate their understanding and determine goals for continued growth. Students can rate their understanding several times throughout the week, unit, or year (they can date it each time they rate it.) All evidence of mastery for that standard (graphic organizers, response to literature, constructed responses, tests, etc.) will go behind this sheet.
Here is what the binder will look like:
Domain divider, “I Can” Checklist sheet, “Let’s Get to the Core of This!” sheet, “I know I can!” sheet, Work Samples, “Let’s Get to the Core of This!” sheet, “I know I can!” sheet, Work Samples, “Let’s Get to the Core of This!” sheet, “I know I can!” sheet, Work Samples,… on and on and on until you get to the next domain divider. You get the picture?
Binders can be sent home regularly for students to discuss progress with their parents. They are great tools for parent/teacher conferences.
Items for the teacher:
• “I can” statements (In kid-friendly language) tied to the CCSS.
o Post them on your “I Can” board in your classroom.
o If you store your resources in binders (as opposed to electronically or in file folders), you can use these as dividers to organizer your materials. Simply store in page protectors, then pop them out and onto your wall when you are teaching that standard.
• “I can” checklist (organized by students and standard)
o Use this sheet to keep track of student mastery of standards in a grade book-type style.
• Parent letter
o Distribute this sheet to parents to explain the “I can!” binder.
• Levels of Understanding Posters
o These cute ice cream-themed posters help students to assess their understanding of the skill at hand.
• “I can” statement labels
o These labels can be printed on Avery address labels and placed on activity sheets prior to copying.
Also for the students (but not for the binders)
• “I can communicate my learning” sheet
o This sheet facilitates dialogue between parent and student over student learning and progress. You can send this home with student along with their binder at regular intervals throughout the year.
