Teaching young children self-regulation is one of the most difficult challenges we have in the classroom. This adapted book is written in first person to help teach children to make choices to help calm themselves. I included eleven different calming strategies so that you can print and assemble a book custom tailored to the child you are teaching and include only the options available to that child.
Once printed, I suggest you laminate the individual pages for reading. I've also included matching pieces for vocabulary words I have chosen to highlight in the text. This book focuses on the fringe words: frustrated, calm, breathe out, gum, count, drink, exercise, listen to music, push, read, fidget toy, walk, work. More specific instructions are included for creating your adapted book to last several school years.
This book coordinates with my Calming Strategies Vocabulary Folder Game for Special Education
This book is also available as part of my Social Stories Adapted Book Bundle: 8 Adapted Books
I also have a set of coordinating printable posters you can place in a calming area of your classroom to help reinforce calm choices. It is available here: Calm Choices Classroom Posters
Adapted books would also be good resources for any young learner, an early childhood special education classroom, simple literacy or math centers for preschool and prekindergarten classrooms and home schoolers who are teaching students with unique abilities. Because the principles of teaching vocabulary are very similar for both language delayed children with special needs and new English learners, my books are also an excellent resource for an ELL/ELD/EFL classroom for young children. Created by *miss kim designs* a store for the unique learners in your life.
