A guideline for small groups of students to use when reading a new, challenging selection. Takes them step-by-step through the close reading process.
Most effective to use after the teacher has modeled the process. Project on your board (or make a chart) a short, challenging selection. Anything from Appendix B would work! Using a colored marker, do a "think aloud" activity and mark your thoughts in short notes in the margin. Show the students what "thinking while reading" really means and how it helps one to read closely and better understand difficult passages.
