I use this template for every subject! Just type your I can statements in the box. Insert as many boxes as needed. Then, print and copy for each student.
At the beginning of the unit, have the students date the second column.
Read through the i can statements with the students. Students put a B in the box if they do not know any information about the topic, a D in the box if they have some previous understanding of the topic, and an S in the box if they feel confident enough about the topic that they could pass an assessment on it. If my students choose to put an S in any box, then they must go to the farthest right column and prove to me that they are able to meet the I can statement. The proof can be with an equation, an explanation, or a reference to an activity that they completed proficiently (see the pretest, or see page 4 of the packet, or see my project on...)
Repeat this process again in the middle of the unit. Fill in the date on the third column. Have students mark their progress on the standards again B, D, S. Again, if they write an S have them prove in the prove it column that they are secure.
Repeat this process again at the end of the unit. Fill in the date on the fourth column. Have students mark their progress on the standards again B, D, S. Again, if they write an S have them prove in the prove it column that they are secure.
I keep this page in my student packets, or whole punch them and put it in the middle binding of a pronged folder, or binder. I also keep a class copy on the I can statement board at the front of the classroom. I always have the I can statements filled in for every subject hanging on the front of the classroom, and my students have their own copies to fill out in their folders, etc. At the end of the unit, I collect them review them and send them home or keep them in a file if I need the data for a conference, IEP, or for other documentation purposes. Please feel free to send me questions!
