Once students have developed a basic understanding of beginning sounds they need to develop fluency. One quick way to include daily practice and motivate students to master this skill is through the use of the I Have...Who Has? card decks. This deck can be used as both a whole class practice or as a center activity for small groups.
This deck contains 2 games with 27 cards in each game. The first game has beginning sounds in alphabetical order and the second game has beginning sounds in random order.
Classroom Management Strategies
Here are a few classroom management strategies that have been proven effective for this activity:
Distribute one card to each student, then distribute the extras to strong students or students with good behavior (a small reward).
As you distribute the cards, encourage students to begin thinking about what picture is on for their card. When all cards are distributed, select the "I Start" card to begin. Play continues until the game come to the "end of the game" card.
As the class become more familiar with the pictures and beginning sounds, consider introducing a stopwatch to time the class game. Record the time on the board so that students try each game to beat their current best time. This practice encourages students to stay attentive
Partner or Small-Group Play:
One student deals out the cards to all players.
Players arrange the cards face-up in front of them.
Play begins with the "I Start" card.
Play continues as in the class game.
Students turn over the cards after reading them.
The first person to turn over all his/her cards, wins the game. [Note: this is completely random but don't tell the students!]
Shuffle the cards and repeat the game.
I hope this can be a fun activity for you students. Please leave any feedback so I may improve this product and my future ones!
