Product Description
In this unit for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, you will find classroom-tested strategies, activities, and questions that are aligned with the rigor of the Common Core and provide the relevancy and interaction that students love for Black History Month, Women's History Month, or anytime! The structure of this unit is designed to guide students through the novel, and as they go, the questions, prompts, and activities require deeper thinking. The overarching questions are present and addressed in every segment, and the work prepares students for the culminating writing task. A unit plan such as this one gives the teacher ultimate flexibility in instruction, assessment, and classroom procedure.

Special note on the complexity of content: This particular novel has found its way to the banned book list. It does touch on sensitive issues and include disturbing descriptions of racism, sexuality, and violence. I have provided a couple of resources to address this issue. First, is a parent permission letter than can be sent home for permission to read. Secondly, those questionable chapters are clearly separated from the other materials. Teachers could skip those chapters and provide only short summaries if need be. The autobiography has successfully been used in 8-12 grade classrooms.
