This project-based learning full unit uses the essays "Us and Them" and "The Santaland Diaries" by David Sedaris. This resource gives students the ability to analyze and critique non-fiction essays in order to discover how authors use tone, voice, and diction to achieve their purpose.
This unit includes links to two David Sedaris essays that are easily accessible, especially for a 1:1 classroom, so no outside texts needed! The unit culminates with students writing their own short personal essay.
Students will answer the driving questions: How does an author’s unique voice affect the reader’s interpretation of an essay?
