The story takes place during the Space Race of 1969. All of the boys in Mamie's class want to be an astronaut while the girls aspire to marry one. Neither of those options appeals to 10 year old Mamie. When Mamie's teacher assigns letter writing to one of the astronauts on the Apollo 11, Mamie begins writing daily letters to Michael Collins. As each of her family members leave her, she finds herself home alone for days at a time. Her letters strongly parallel how lonely Michael Collins must be while orbiting the other 2 astronauts as they walk on the moon. While the text is written in a child's voice, it provides a symbolic connection and a good understanding of women's changing roles during the 1960's.
This text contains themes of friendship, family, gender roles, and independence.
It is one of the Sunshine State Readers for Battle of the Books. It is best suited for grades 4-7.
