Scary stories always seem to grab the attention of the reader… okay so maybe you are plugging your ears or covering your eyes but you still can’t resist the story. I have found this to be so true with my students as well. For my students, the idea of them writing a story that gives their teacher Goosebumps seems to be enough reason to start writing.
In this unit your students will be writing as well as creating their own monster and monster story. The idea of creating their character for their story always excites my students. I start the unit by reading the story I Need My Monster written by Amanda Noll. It really describes the monsters in the story and it helps create a different perspective of scary. The monsters are scary but the boy loves and needs his scary monster. The term “scary” takes on a whole new idea which helps the students see that scary doesn’t mean things from the movies (if you know what I mean).
There are planning tools, craftivity templates, publishing paper, scary story elements teaching posters and celebration ideas in this unit. As well as a little math connection with ideas and resources for creating a monster store and monster money! I am sure your students will have a monster of a time writing and sharing their stories!
