OVERVIEW:

This BUNDLE of vocabulary and reading activities were created to help students learn, review, and apply vocabulary strategies in context as well as learn, review, and apply reading skills and strategies using the book "I Need My Monster" by Amanda Noll.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

5 Vocabulary Activities: This resources includes five different vocabulary activities.

Activity #1 - Cloze Sentences: This activity introduces students to the six vocabulary words from the book by asking them to predict what the vocabulary words might mean when given a sentence from the book, predict what the words might mean when given the word, and then to put the two together to create six sentences that make sense. This activity is based off of the book Word Nerds.

Activity #2 - What Do You Think?: This activity asks students to analyze the vocabulary words in context by rereading the section of the text that they are in. Students will determine the part of speech of the word, what the word means, and the book clues they used.

Activity #3 - Four Corners: This activity asks students to play a game of four corners. Students will be asked a vocabulary question, which they will record their answer to on a recording sheet before going to the correct corner. An answer key for this activity is included.

Activity #4 - Vocabulary Walk: This activity asks students to get into groups and write a 7-Up sentence for each vocabulary word on anchor charts that have been posted around the room.

Activity #5 - Vocabulary Social: This activity asks students to interact with each other as if they were one of their vocabulary words. They will need to know one of their words, its definition, its part of speech, a synonym and antonym of the word, and how to use it in a sentence. A recording sheet (i.e. script) has been included for students to use.

3 Versions: All of the activities in this pack can be printed (color and black and white versions offered), projected as a pdf, or opened in Google Slides. A link to the Google Slides versions is included.

5 Lesson Plans: This resources includes five different lesson plans.

Lesson #1 - Monstrous Descriptions: This lesson asks students tolisten and watch for explicit information given by the author or illustrator about what each of the monsters looks like.

Lesson #2 - Pick or Not?: This lesson asks students to analyze the main character's personality by looking at the character's thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Lesson #3 - Oozing Onomatopoeia: This lesson asks students to identify onomatopoeias that were used in the text and how they help the reader understand the story better.

Lesson #4 - Story Elements: This lesson asks students to identify the story elements of setting, character, and point-of-view then use those elements to write a summary. An extension of turning their summary into a comic strip is included as well.

Lesson #5 - A Point-of-View Twist: This lesson ask students to write about one section of the text from one of the monster's point-of-view.
