This simple graphic organizer is a fantastic way to get students invested in certain topics they will be reading or writing about. Simply hand out an organizer to each student, project a series of pictures/visual images (I use photos, charts, maps, etc.) and have them fill out column by column. Students start listing every detail they see in the photo, then they write down what they think about what they see, and finally they generate questions they still have on the topic. While seemingly simple, these "topic immersion" activities really get students invested in wanting to read or learn more about a topic. I use this about once a week before diving into an informational text on a new topic with my students. They LOVE it!
