    The focus of this resource is on individual vowel sounds as well as mixed CVC words for all five vowels. For each packet in the bundle, there is a total of eight card sets which help practice building simple questions using CVC words. Four sets build questions in word order, and four sets present the same questions with the words in a scrambled (or nonsense) order.

    Short /a/ Questions:

    • Is the cat in the hat? (no)
    • Is the fan on the van? (yes)
    • Is the ram on the jam? (no)
    • Is the man on the mat? (yes)

    Short /e/ Questions:

    • Is the hen on the web? (no)
    • Is the pen on the bed? (yes)
    • Is the bed on the pen? (yes)
    • Is the net on the bed? (no)

    Short /i/ Questions:

    • Is the pin in the bin? (no)
    • Is the kid on the rib? (yes)
    • Is the kit on the pin? (no)
    • Is the wig on the kid? (yes)

    Short /o/ Questions:

    • Is the top on the pop? (yes)
    • Is the fox on the cot? (no)
    • Is the dog on the box? (yes)
    • Is the tot on the pot? (no)

    Short /u/ Questions:

    • Is the tug on the rug? (no)
    • Is the pup in the cup? (yes)
    • Is the bug in the tub? (no)
    • Is the gum on the bun? (yes)

    Assorted Vowels Questions:

    • Is the man on the map? (no)
    • Is the bag in the bin? (yes)
    • Is the cub on the cab? (no)
    • Is the rat on the rug? (yes)

    Select the cards you wish to have your students practice. Laminate, cut out and post at various locations around the room. If you use mini-clipboards in your classroom, simply fold the pages in half and have your students complete one side at a time. Alternatively, these cards may be placed into a container for use at a learning center.

    Recording Pages: Two response pages are provided to allow for further differentiation. On both pages, the student will search the room for the words and record. Copy or unscramble the words to build the question. Then, s/he will do one of the following:

    1. Select and color the picture (one of four) provided that matches the question.
    2. Illustrate the question.
