Celebrate Spring with this easy prep phonics word work center! Students use magnifying glasses to search for 15 focused short vowel CVC words per board and read and write words on provided recording sheets. One page per short vowel CVC word, and a board with mixed short vowels for students to encode and decode.
This offers a fun, quiet, independent way to practice short vowel blending skills. All levels of my students are motivated by this and stay engaged in working on these I Spy searches for the short period of time one takes to complete.
Tips for obtaining magnifying glasses. Ask a science teacher! The science teacher at my school brought over a box full of itty bitty magnifying glasses to borrow. Also free: yes, ‘there’s an app for that!’ Search magnifying glass on iTunes for free apps.
Teacher to teacher honesty - I implemented this center last year when we needed to get back to quiet learning time. As in, maybe I temporarily took away word work partner games. But! I couldn’t not give my kiddos engaging, fun work. This did the trick. Quiet, allowed students to focus on their own, and they asked for more! Win-win.
Each page includes 15 words. Please download the preview for a list of words provided.
Ideas for use:
