Celebrate with a Cinco de Mayo word work center! Students use magnifying classes to search for 15 Dolch sight words. Students read and write the word on a provided recording sheet.
This offers a fun, quiet, independent way to practice 1st grade sight words. All levels of my students are motivated by this and stay engaged in working on these I Spy searches for the short period of time one takes to complete.
Tips for obtaining magnifying glasses. Ask a science teacher! The science teacher at my school brought over a box full of itty bitty magnifying glasses to borrow. Also free: yes, ‘there’s an app for that!’ Search magnifying glass on iTunes for free apps.
Teacher to teacher honesty - I implemented this center when we needed to get back to quiet learning time. As in, maybe I temporarily took away word work partner games unless we have a volunteer. But! I couldn’t not give my kiddos engaging, fun work. This did the trick. Quiet, allowed students to focus on their own, and they asked for more! Win-win.
Each page includes 15 sight words. Almost all Dolch 1st grade words are used, as well as sight words we use for our phonics curriculum and reading program.
Ideas for use:
-Early Finisher Activity -Word work Center
-Place in page protectors for fewer copies -Allow students to read their completed list on Seesaw
