Phonemic awareness is such a fundamental skill when learning to read. Before students can actually learn to read words on a page, they need to be able to decode and blend words orally. This resource is perfect to help reinforce this skill. It does not include any words. It is just pure oral phonemic awareness!
This resource is fantastic to use to increase fundamental phonemic awareness skills and there are so many different ways to use this in your classroom. Below are a few examples of how to use this resource.
Whole group decoding:
Print (or display on whiteboard) the I spy mat of your choice.
The caller (teacher or student) chooses a picture and decodes it to the class. The class blends the word and a student finds it on the board. To begin with just start with one word, then you can build on it. For example; a f-a-t r-at, th-e f-i-n o-n th-e f-i-sh. There are no limits with the amount of words you use with your students. It will depend on their ability level. It is interesting to see what the students say when they have a turn at decoding.
Whole Group I spy:
Print or display the I spy mat of you choice.
The caller chooses a picture and has to give a clue for the students to find the picture. For example; I p-l-ay i-n m-u-d. I-t i-s h-o-t. If you need to give a bigger clue and do not want to decode the whole clue, just decode part of it. It is the colour of an a-pp-le. Students blend the word/sentence together and find the picture. Ask students to join in and choose a picture to give a clue about.
Both of the whole group games can be played in small groups by printing the page off for each student.
With a partner, students choose a picture mat. They take it in turns to choose and decode a word for their partner to find. They can just decode a word or a few words to describe the picture.
The student chooses a picture mat. They choose a picture and decode it, blend it and cover it (if you wish). They can choose to decode just a word or a few words to describe the picture.
It includes 90 different pictures, with varying number of sounds. There are 6 different mats to choose from and they are differentiated for different skill levels.
