    Bundle Description

These resources introduce a fun way for young learners to master reading 40 pre-primer sight words. Each resource includes four sets of ten objects with school themes.

    • Basic Set: One upper-case word is BELOW each picture. Students write in lower-case.
    • Set 1: Use a magnifying glass to find a single tiny word BELOW each picture.
    • Set 2: Use a magnifying glass to find a single tiny word ON each picture to offer a slightly more difficult challenge.
    • Set 3: Use a mirror to find a single word written backward BELOW each picture.
    • Set 4: Use a mirror to find a single word written upside-down BELOW each picture.
    • Set 8: Use a Fidget Spinner to determine word location.
    • Scoot: Game version (30 cards). Use a magnifying glass to find a single tiny word ON each picture.

    WRITE THE ROOM:

It is suggested that students work in pairs for most of these activities. Each paring will need a magnifying glass, small mirror or fidget spinner as well as a clipboard with a recording sheet. (For mini-clipboards, simply fold the page in half and have your students complete one side at a time.) One child will play the roll of “Spy” and hold the object; the other child is the “Recorder”. They work together to determine the word and it is written on the response sheet by the “Recorder”. The students then trade rolls for the next word. Alternatively, these cards may be placed into a container for use at a learning center.

General instructions: Use a magnifying glass, small mirror or fidget spinner to find the word on the card. Write the words down as you find them. Read them to the teacher or a friend when your paper is full.

    SCOOT:

The focus of this activity is on recognizing and identifying pre-primer sight words. Included are thirty (30) cards with an apple theme. In addition to the card set, you will need a class set of magnifying glasses (one for each child).

Set Up: Print, cut and laminate the cards for durability. Place an apple card on each desk or at each seat. You may also wish to use the optional arrow cards to indicate which direction the child will move when you give the signal (see below). It is suggested that you secure the cards to each table with Painter’s Tape to prevent the cards from shifting. The tape is easily removed from the cards at the end of the game and will not leave any residue. Photocopy a recording sheet for each child. They are provided for 15, 18, 21 and 30 students. (The answer sheet for 30 students will need to be copied double-sided.)

Game Play: Pass out the recording sheets and pencils first. Instruct the students to write their names at the top of their pages. Next, inform the students that they will also be receiving a magnifying glass. When they receive it, they are NOT to use it yet. Instead, they should hold it in their hand, with their hand raised over their head. When you say, “Ready begin,” the students will use their magnifying glass to locate the tiny word hidden on the apple and copy it onto the corresponding space on their worksheets. For example, if a child has card #14, s/he should record the word from their card onto the line next to #14 on their paper. When all the students have finished writing their words, you will say, “Scoot.” The children will leave their pencils and magnifying glasses on the table, and carry ONLY their papers with them to the next seat. Continue playing until each student has had the opportunity to visit and record the words on each table. Be sure to review the words with your class when you have finished the game.

    Have fun with these activities.
