I love historical fiction and Lauren Tarshis makes a great storyline. The I Survived series is a historical fiction that students enjoy reading for many reasons. The number 1 comment I get is that they can't believe it happened!  This resource covers chapters 1 and 2 in narrative elements, close reading, figurative language, and many more ELA elements.

I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 is a historical fiction set in Matawaw Creek in New Jersey. This novel companion has parts that are objective and a great conversation starter for students. I loved putting the students in small groups and walking around to hear their conversation. They love talking about real-life events and giving their own ideas on the heroes survive or how they 'would do it'.
