I Want a Pet! is a patterned story with the central theme of trying to convince your Dad that you need a pet … “Everyone in our class has a pet … except me!” The child then itemizes every friend and their pets. There are three versions of this resource. This is the Regular Version (non symbol-supported).
This resource is designed to address the use of the possessive ’s inflection and use of the ponouns he/she ( “Meeka has a really kool pet. He/She has a green and yellow parakeet” (Is Meeka a girl or a boy? … A girl? Okay ... Then what pronoun should we use to stand in for Meeka … he or she?). If you are using and interactive whiteboard, the pen tool can be used to circle the correct pronoun.
When each page opens a new friend is introduced with a sound effect of their pet inviting students to guess the kool pet. A series of animations follow:
Click 1: Drumrolls the appearance of text revealing the mystery pet
Click 2: Introduces a graphic of the mystery pet + it’s sound effect.
Click 3: Provides a ‘choice board’ allowing the student to ‘sample the voice output of three printed words then decide what is the correct word to denote possession.
Click 4: the correct choice is announced; the animal moves in closer proximity to the friend to receive a kiss.

This resource can be displayed on the 'big screen' (interactive whiteboard, large screen TV using Apple TV) or the 'small screen' (computer monitor, iPad/Android tablet using the free Microsoft PowerPoint app).
