Phonemic awareness is the first, and most important, step when learning to read.
This game allows students to practise this vital skill while having fun with their classmates.
Students sit in a circle. A student holds the basket with the picture cards in it and walks around the circle. All students sing the rhyme and whoever the students stops in front of chooses a card from the basket and segments the animal name they pick out. Everyone blends the word together. The students swap places and everyone says the rhyme again. Continue until all of the students have had a turn.
All of the cards included are animals. You can choose to use all of them or choose specific cards depending on skill level. There are 70 cards altogether.
There are different ways that this resource can be used depending on your little learners.
- If you are focussing on beginning sounds, students can look at the picture and say the beginning sound (or middle/end)
- Students can say how many sounds are in the word and sort them
- Students can segment the word and the class can blend it together
