This beginning of the year (or anytime you have 10 minutes!) activity introduces students to the elements in the periodic table and their 1 or 2 letter symbols. It's great for introducing your expectations for participation and for teaching students to use a loud speaking voice.
Cut out these cards and give one to each students. (I like to make them last longer by gluing to card-stock) Now, the competition begins! Choose a student to start. He will say, "Who has the element with the symbol Ar?" The student with the correct card will then say "I have argon," and continue the cycle by reading the next clue. The goal is to get through every card as fast as possible. It takes practice, and I recommend shuffling the cards after the first round to see if the students can get a better time.
The set includes 32 cards, so if your class is smaller you need to give a few students more than one card.
