I think monsters are...
What a fun way to introduce or reinforce opinion writing during Writer's Workshop! After reading, "The Monster Who Lost His Mean" by Tiffany Strelitz Haber, the students can write what their favorite part was and why it was their favorite.
The second writing worksheet has the students write their own opinions about monsters, and then draw a picture of their own monster to go with their writing.
I have also included a mini-poster printout that can be displayed on your Elmo or Smart Board to help your kindergartners spell some of the words they might use in their writing.
This writing activity is aligned with the following Common Core State Standards:
W.K.1 - Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book (e.g., My favorite book is...).
W.K.5 - With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
W.K.6 - With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
