An EDITABLE, ready to "print and go" lab handout, useful for IB Chemistry (HL or SL) as a fun way to use calorimetry with combustible fuels. Students will calculate energy density and molar enthalpy of combustion to analyze fuel quality. The student handout is three pages and includes pre and post-lab questions for students.
This experiment is for Topic 5 (Energetics and Thermochemistry) in the IB curriculum, and also fulfills one of the "prescribed practicals" requirements new in the 2016 redo of the IB Chemistry Syllabus.
Also included: two pages of teacher hints and chemical prep notes, including answers to pre-lab questions and extra questions to ask your students as they work!
Note: this is a .docx so that you can edit the lab handout to add or subtract what you like. I have been teaching for 9 years - I know sometimes you want to make it your "own."
