A SmartBoard notebook file that has an ethnic/linguistic map of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Students can be split into groups and asked to draw new boundary lines trying as much as possible to follow the principle of self-determination. Debrief maps with whole class then have students read David Williamson, "War and Peace: International Relations 1878-1941" p. 18 and Nick Fellows, "Peacemaking, Peacekeeping: International Relations 1918-1936" pp. 18-23. Students could then write a paragraph describing the other problems facing the peacemakers in 1919. File is easily convertible to PDF if you choose to use it as a handout.
