According to the IB Learner Profile, students should strive to be: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. This is the SEVENTH of 10 lessons prepared to engage high school students in the IB Learner Profile.
This is the CARING lesson and it is designed to force teenagers to think about why we all need to take care of ourselves and each other. Students begin by determining: how do we define empathy? The second activity requires ADDITIONAL materials: a Break Your Own Geodes Kit (you can find this on Amazon for $10-15) and a hammer. During this second activity, students wonder: Are they capable of caring? And how does cracking geodes open relate to being MORE caring?
SWBAT define empathy.
SWBAT identify the special parts of themselves and others that deserve care.
As an IB school, we try to incorporate the Learner Profile in our school community, culture, and curriculum as often as possible. In addition to monthly lessons and daily "Do Now" activities for each characteristic, at the end of each month, our school also awards IB Learner Profile t-shirts to students who received a "Shout Out" for the characteristic. We also designed color-coded bracelets and stickers (inspired by the Periodic Table of Elements) to go with each characteristic.
