This used to be the IB Math Studies Readiness Packet (if you already purchased it, just download it again to get the updated file with the updated name on the student pages), but now the class has a new name: IB Math Applications and Interpretation.
Want to assess the prerequisite skills your students have when they set foot in your classroom? This packet is important to complete either in the summer right before the start of school or during the first week of school. This unit also includes two activities to encourage parental involvement as well as a certificate to motivate and encourage students to put effort into their math class. I’ve discovered throughout the years that so many students tune out mathematics once they take Pre-Algebra or especially Algebra 1 because it’s the first time they need to think about mathematics abstractly. That’s why as a teacher I always push them to try their best and encourage them through positive reinforcements (verbal praise, stickers on A papers, etc.) to be successful in mathematics. I tell my students they don’t necessarily have to like math, but they certainly need to be able to do math!
Included in this unit:
1. Forty math problems on solving linear equations, finding midpoint, distance, slope, and x- and y-intercepts, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, perimeter, circumference, area and volume, measures of central tendency, Pythagorean Theorem, quadratic equations, scientific notation, and systems of linear equations.

Common Core Standards/Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
• Solve linear equations
• Find midpoint, distance, and slope given two ordered pairs
• Find the x- and y-intercepts of linear equations
• Solve arithmetic and geometric sequences and series problems
• Write numbers in scientific notation
• Solve systems of equations by graphing, substitution, and elimination
• Recognize that a data distribution may not have a definite center and that different ways to measure center yield different values.
• Reason about relationships among shapes to determine perimeter, area, circumference and volume

Suggested Lesson Implementation:
1. You can use this as a summer packet for your students to complete by the first day of school. You can collect the packets or simply have the students switch papers and check their answers.
2. My preference is to give these students this packet on the first day (or within the first week) of school and make it due in five days. That way, students can review the prerequisite skills needed for IB Math Applications and Interpretation. Some schools undergo a lot of schedule changes during the first week of school so reviewing these skills is not a waste of the student’s time or yours. The Interview assignment and Family Math Tree are interesting ways to get the students to talk about mathematics within their home. You can also log it down as two ways you promote parental involvement in your math class.
